Precious Voids is a project which talks about how the power of boredom and the voids during our daily life stimulates our activity and creativity, consisting of four pieces.
Boredom acts as a stimulant, prompting us to seek novel experiences and activities. It pushes the boundaries of our comfort zones, inspiring creative thinking and problem solving.
Embracing these voids in our routine can lead to unexpected discoveries, encouraging us to explore new interests and perspectives. In essence, boredom is not merely a lull in our daily lives but a canvas upon which innovation and imagination can flourish.
Excitement, comfort, spontaneity and curiosity, where words which stood out in the research about boredom and helped to find the right form language for this project. The form had to express the lightness of voids, in form of a body to be able to convert it into a jewel. The idea was to find a form a shape which embodies the importance of emptiness. The red thread that connects the bodies, represent the contrast between the conscious and unconscious.
To form the core and channel of the earrings, 925 sterling silver was shaped into tubes following the movement of the drawings. These were soldered to tubes of varying sizes, polished, and fitted with a pin on the back. The channel for the cold enamel was created by filing the surface flat in preparation for the final application.
The second piece is an ear cuff, designed to be worn in combination with either the middle or smallest earring from the set. Inspired by the first design, it mirrors the same visual language and is shaped to follow the curve of the left ear. A pin on the reverse ensures a secure fit.
The third is a single earring that complements both the original set and the ear cuff. Designed to fit either ear, it continues the same aesthetic and offers a simple way to create an intentionally asymmetrical look.
The channels were filled with red enamel. Because there are so many soldered parts in the pieces, it is not possible to use the normal enamel, but the cold one. It is a two component enamel, containing the pigmented one and the hardener. To create a jewel with it, it is applied on the finished and polished jewel.
The idea of creating four different pieces is to have the alternation of ways how to wear them. They are interchangeable and can be combined between the first set, the ear cuff and the smaller piece. As the inspiration is Boredom and how we get creative and active in vacant moments, I decided to include the changing in styling and wearability.
My choice to use silver, is based on the idea of recalling the lightness of the emptiness. Something that is seen as empty is never really empty if you think of the structure around it. to show the shine and importance of the shapes which contain the voids, I chose silver as a precious metal.
